Song Review: Ed Sheeran – Afterglow

Read our review of Ed Sheeran’s new song “Afterglow”.

Grammy-winning British singer and songwriter, Ed Sheeran made a comeback to the music scene with the song “Afterglow” before the year ended. He had taken a break from releasing music to be with his family, and also welcomed his first child in the process.

The release of the new song reminded fans of Ed’s first releases at the beginning of his very successful music career. Undeniably one of the world’s most versatile artists, the “Sing” hit maker went back to the kind of music he is famous for which features him singing over a guitar.

As previously mentioned, the guitar forms the song’s background, and Sheeran sings comfortably about moments with his lover. In case you are confused about it, “Afterglow” is a love song. However, he doesn’t out outright sing about being in love, but the song’s lyrics describe time spent with his lover.

He sings about forgetting the world while they are together. He also sings about holding on to the “afterglow”, when the time seems to have passed. As usual, Ed has created a beautifully written song. We might as well call him the reigning king of love songs.

“Afterglow” seems to tear a few pages from his previous hits “Photographs”, “Perfect”, “Gimme Love”, etc. They perfectly describe the feeling of love, and being with one’s lover. While many have speculated that the new release is inspired by his wife, it might just be true. This is because, “Afterglow” is more intimate than a lot of his songs.

It feels like a song written after spending time away from the rest of the world. Imagine watching the sunset with your lover, the song is just perfect for it. Ed Sheeran proves he’s still an impressive songwriter who can sing about even the slightest emotion.
