It’s not the end of 2019 yet and we still expect more albums and major projects to be dropped but we want to take some time to check out some of the best albums from this year. In no particular order.
10. Wilmer – Patoranking
Patoranking‘s Wilmer was one of the main projects that inspired this year. The announcement and promotion around it was crazy and when it finally dropped, it was worth the hype.
He had Davido, Dadju, Busiswa and more as features on the project with “Lenge Lenge” coming through as one of the most popular songs on the track.
9. The Spirit of Life – Tope Alabi and TY Bello
This project from gospel music star woman, Tope Alabi got a lot of publicity too. While she has always been popular around staunch spiritual people, her music reached out to more with this album. Logan Ti O De was one of the popular tracks on the project.
8. Tradition – Runtown
Coming as his first major project since starting his own label, the project connected. Admittedly, the hype was reduced but we still got to enjoy some of the songs on the project even as we continue to praise the sound god.
7. Moral Instruction – Falz
This album was the one through which Falz drew a comparison with the legendary Fela Kuti. Not only did he get the designer that used to make Fela’s art covers, his style also reflected it. The album was political and trended.
6. Amayanabo – Idahams
The EP from Idahams trended for a while too. Not the strongest showing from him but the project had songs that had been released in the past and that helped push it.
Hustle, No One Else, Gbege were standout tracks on the project and guarantee it a place on this list.
5. The Light – Bez
This album from a talented alte singer, Bez came as a welcome relief. Released on the same day as Burna Boy‘s African Giant album, the album still held its own and got a decent amount of publicity. As always, Bez gave a good showing of himself on what came as a comeback project.
4. In Her Feelings – Omawumi
The Megbele crooner has always been one of the reserved ones that understand how to deliver timely songs that also stand the test of time.
The EP had songs like For My Baby, Mr Sinnerman, Away and more. A decent showing from her worthy of commendation.
3. Illosophy – Ill Bliss
Ill Bliss has always been one of those stars that are not always in your face but are there, making music. He delivered nice chops on this and we love the project.
2. Chulo Vibes – Timaya
Timaya‘s Chulo Vibes project had a number of songs that connected. Balance was one of those songs. It made a lot of playlists and further increased the standing of the artiste.
1. African Giant – Burna Boy
This album is without doubt the biggest to emerge from the continent this year. Coming on the heels of his BET International Artiste of the Year win, it was highly anticipated and we dig it.
