We must say, the Lockdown came with some really good entertainment. Thanks to super Hip Hop producers Tweezy and Gemini Major, The Evolution Of SA Hip Hop live battle was born.

The battle features some of the notable names in the genre going head to head with their music catalogues. We have seen some very impressive battles happen including one on CastleLite’s “In Bed With” , and it’s all been love. Now here’s a ranking of all the best, and most talked about ones.

1. Emtee Vs Nasty C

Rappers, Emtee and Nasty C probably had the biggest Instagram Live battle of all. The battle became the most talked about and all the most viewed. With impressive music catalogues from both sides, everyone knew the two were meant to go up against each other.

As expected, there were no hard feelings, just two greats having fun and putting up their songs against each other. The Live battle was watched by 15,700 people and attracted over 100k viewers on Instagram. It became one of the highest rated Live battles since the show began.

Nasty C put up a total of 15 songs and so did Emtee. The Zulu man came swinging with songs including Juice, Strings & Bling, Particular, Jump, SMA, Winning, UOK and more. Emtee’s battle songs included Roll Up, Pearl Thusi, Wave, Brand New Day, and his newest addition, Johustleburg.

In the end, Nasty C took the crown by a really slim chance. The battle got a lot of great reviews from both fans and fellow rappers alike. The two rappers proved they were great entertainers and also great competitors.

2. Okmalumkoolkat Vs Riky Rick

This was definitely the battle that became everyone’s favourite. Mzansi rapper, L’Tido dubbed it his favourite of all time, and so did a lot of people. It didn’t really feel like a battle, it was practically two friends enjoying each other’s company while social media watched happily.

Whoever set these two against up each other did a great job at it. Okmalumkoolkat and Riky Rick presented 15 songs from their impressive catalogues against each other and it was both entertaining, insightful and nerve racking. The battle fast became one of the most talked about on social media as it trended on Twitter for a while.

Okmalumkoolkat presented hit songs including Sebenza, 100k Macassette, Holy Oxygen, La Liga, Gusheshe, Amalobolo, and more. And, Riky Rick also put up 15 hits including Zulu Girls, Fuseg, Stay Shining, Whole Thing, Boss Zonke, Buy It Out, Nkalakatha Remix, and many more.

However, Riky took the crown in the end. The Live battle got rave reviews from viewers and was talked about for a while. Viewers noted that both rappers dished a lot of knowledge, stories, and good vibes.

3. DJ Maphorisa Vs DJ Tira

There is only one word to describe how this was, it’s Amazing. Everyone knew what was going to happen when DJ Tira and DJ Maphorisa went head to head against each other late last month.

The battle was first announced by Castle Lite Unlocks “In Bed With”. It was a new segment which would feature both Disc Jockeys in a bid to raise funds to help people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. For each viewer that watched the show, CastleLite donated R1. The Live battle was hosted by “Umlilo” hit maker, DJ Zinhle.

Even before it all went down, social media was flooded with predictions of who would win. Literally everyone wanted to know how it would turn out and who would claim victory. The two DJs had worked together on “Particular” song fronted by Major Lazer, and featuring Nasty C, Jidenna, Ice Prince and Patoranking.

In the end, the show happened and became a huge success. It was fun from start till finish and we witnessed both hit makers put up their hits against each other. In the end, fans were torn about who they felt took the crown.

4. Tshego Vs Tellaman

This battle was probably the most underrated battle this lockdown because it featured two of the most talented names in the SA music industry. Everyone knows just how hard the two artists work, and also how impressive their music is. They have both made names for themselves in the music scene.

The Live battle didn’t get as much hype as the other ones did but it was really enjoyed by the people who viewed it. Tshego and Tellaman came through with some of their previous and most recent hit songs. Of course, No Ties found its way into the mix, and was a worthy competitor.

However, in the end, fans were confused about who they felt the crown really belonged to although Tshego walked tall. Fans took to social media to argue it out with some hailing Tellaman for putting up a good fight and proclaiming him their winner. Others, practically gave the win to Tshego. It was a really impressive battle and both artists stood out.

5. Tweezy vs Gemini Major

9 days into the lockdown, popular Hip hop producers, Tweezy and Gemini Major decided to entertain Mzansi with a battle of their music catalogues. The battle became the first of a string of entertaining battles and was quite a show.

When it was first announced, literally everyone wanted to see it unfold. Some of their biggest collaborative hits were put up against each other and it was impressive to see. Also, unreleased songs by both AKA (Iron Duke) and Cassper Nyovest (Amademoni) were played and fans were overjoyed.

Some of Mzansi’s biggest Hip Hop names including Nasty C, Cassper Nyovest, DJ PH, Tshego, Moozlie and more also tuned in to watch. Practically everyone who saw it gave it a high rating and it trended on social media.

The battle ended with a rating of 15:13 by Slikour but everyone just had fun with it no one really wanted to crown a winner. It led to a string of battles featuring some of the biggest names in the game and hosted by the two producers.
