Biography

Glynnis Breytenbach is a South African lawyer, prosecutor, advocate, politician, legislator, and author. She is a former prosecutor for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of South Africa, a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance (DA), and South Africa’s Shadow Minister of Justice. Breytenbach called for an end to the ongoing political interference that has compromised the integrity of the NPA.

The media extensively covered her protracted dispute with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) over her suspension in 2012 from its Specialised Commercial Crime Unit. She published a memoir, “Rule of Law,” in 2017, and in 2018, was shortlisted for the National Director of Public Prosecutions post at the NPA. She later withdrew her candidacy. Breytenbach has been a member of the South African Parliament since 2014.

“They said I had an unnaturally close relationship with her. That suggested that I had an affair with her. I have never had an affair with Glynnis. I have known her for probably 25 years.” Glynnis also concurred.

We’re going to turn this country around.” She has been a member of Parliament since 2014. She is a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

In her memoir, Glynnis talks about her family. She wrote that she was told that her grandmother’s heritage was Jewish and that her family originated from Eastern Europe. When they arrived in South Africa, they decided not to live like Jews or raise their children in Jewish ways. About her family’s decision, she wrote, “I believe you can’t hide from what you are, and you shouldn’t. But it’s easier to say that from where I am rather than from where they were.”

Legal Career

Glynnis is a former prosecutor for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of South Africa. She was suspended by acting National Director of Public Prosecutions Nomgcobo Jiba from her position as a regional head at the NPA’s Specialised Commercial Crime Unit (SCCU) on the basis of a complaint laid by a company called Imperial Crown Trading. She claimed she was suspended because she had pursued the prosecution of the former head of the police’s Crime Intelligence Division, Richard Mdluli, on fraud and corruption charges.
