Biography

Bonani Benjamin Dube known professionally as Benjamin Dube is a South African Gospel singer, songwriter, music producer, pastor, and also a TV show host. Benjamin Dube is the last born son of the late Reverend Benjamin Dube (Senior) and Mrs. Grace Dube.

Benjamin Dube has been divorced two times. He was last married to Mapila Thabile Dube with whom he has one son, Mangi Dube. He has four sons. Three of his sons (with Phindile), Mthokozisi Dube, Sihle Dube, and Buhle Dube are part of the Dube Brothers. He counsels couples based on his experiences with divorce and marriages.

Family & Beginnings

Benjamin Dube was born in Johannesburg, South Africa to Benjamin Dube (Snr) and Mrs. Grace Dube. He is the last of 5 children. Dube and his siblings grew up in Meadowlands, Soweto in a Christian family. Dube’s father was a guitarist and his mother was a singer, they were always on the road as evangelists in the Assemblies of God Church (Back to God Crusade) under the late Bishop Nicholas Bhengu.

Dube developed love for the guitar at age 9. He began playing the drums and bass guitar at age 11. He and his siblings were taught how to sing and harmonize by his mother. They began singing in church as the Dube Family Singers. His father was murdered when he was 14. However, the Dube Family Singers continued their father’s legacy and toured the Netherlands.

The story of their father’s murder as told them by their mother inspired the album “Vader Vergeef he then” meaning “Father Forgive Them”. In 1980, Dube founded a singing group in High School called “Share The Good News”

Dube entered an SABC talent search and won. He was spotted by a secular artist, Sello “Chicco” Twala who invited him to be the lead Vocalist of his pop band “Image”. He began his journey in ministry in 1986 when he recorded “HOLY SPIRIT” as Benjamin and The Youth Choir. He has since recorded many songs as a solo artist, and forged his own path in ministry.

Education

Bonani Benjamin Dube is an educated man. He attended Daliwonga Secondary School, and also took a degree in Psychology.

Musical Milestones

Dube’s relationship with Chicco Twala became the start of his rise. After releasing “HOLY SPIRIT” as Benjamin and The Youth Choir (produced by Chicco), the song’s success made him a household name in South Africa. He featured Lucky Dube on the song “Ebenezer” in 1988 and was invited as a supporting act for US Gospel star, James Cleveland when he toured South Africa. Dube also later toured the US and shared the stage with Andre Crouche and more.

He has since released several platinum and Gold selling albums.
