Biography

Bhekokwakhe Hamilton Cele, famously known as Bheki Cele, is a South African politician and anti-apartheid activist. Bheki Cele has been the South African minister of police since February 2018. He served as the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service for two years. In October 2011, misconduct allegations led to his suspension and removal in June 2012. Cele has served as Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries on the Kwa-Zulu Natal Executive Council and in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Provincial Legislature. Cele is also a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress (ANC). He was imprisoned on Robben Island during the apartheid.

Daughter

Bheki Cele has a daughter who society believes looks just like her father. Her name is Khumbuza Cele. Khumbuza went viral on social media after a video of her having the time of her life at her birthday party (also attended by her father) made rounds on social media. The birthday party was held at Coco nightclub in Cape Town. Media influencer Musa Khawula shared the video. Khumbuza was spotted drinking alcohol, something her father had criticized. It led to so much backlash, and social media users labeled the minister of Police a ‘hypocrite.’ Cele denied being related to her later on and threatened to take legal action against Khawula.

Salary

Cele is believed to have earned R1.3 million during his time as National Commissioner of Police until 2013. From 2014, he served as the deputy minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries and earned around R1.2million. During a cabinet reshuffle, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed him the acting South African Minister of Police. His salary for this role is believed to be around R1.4million, but that has been debated.

Education

Bheki Cele completed his primary and secondary school education in his hometown of Umzumbe. He holds a diploma in Education and Information Technology. There is no information about the institutions he attended. He had initially planned to study Law but could not gather the resources to fund his dream.

Cele is one of the Founding Members of the National Education Union of South Africa.
