Biography

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, rapper, and dancer. Burna attained popularity as an artist following the release of his 2012 hit song “Like To Party”. It was the lead single for his debut album “L.I.F.E” which was released in 2013. Burna Boy signed a deal with Bad Habit / Atlantic Records in the US in 2017, and also signed with Warner Music Group internationally.

He made his major label debut with the album “Outside” in 2018. At the 2019 BET Awards, he won the Best International Act award, and was also announced as an Apple Music Up Next artist in the same year. His fourth studio album, African Giant was released in 2019. It won the “Album of the Year” award at the All Africa Music Awards in the same year, and earned a Best World Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. Burna Boy clinched a second Grammy Award nomination at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards for his follow-up album, “Twice As Tall” which was executive produced by Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs.

Early Life & Career

Burna Boy was born and raised in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. His father was the manager of a welding company, while his mother, Bose Ogulu worked as a translator. She is presently his manager. Burna’s grandfather, Benson Idonije once managed, Nigerian Afrobeats Icon, Fela Kuti.

Burna attended Corona Secondary School in Agbara. He later relocated to London to further his studies. He studied Media Technology at the University of Sussex, and later, Media and Communications Culture at Oxford Brookes University.

Burna released his debut studio album, L.I.F.E in 2013. It served as a follow up to his second mixtape “Burn Identity” released in 2011. The album sold 40,000 copies on the first day of its release. It was preceded by the singles “Like To Party”, “Tonight”, “Always Love You”, “Run My Race”, and “Yawa Dey”.

He released his second album “On A Spaceship” in 2015. His debut EP “Redemption” was released in 2016. He released his third album “Outside” in 2018, his fourth, “African Giant” in 2019, and his fifth “Twice As Tall” in 2020.

He has collaborated with various local and international artists including Olamide, TuBaba, Wizkid, Sia, Sam Smith, and more. He has received two Grammy Nominations, and has performed sold out shows across the world. Burna Boy has also won several awards including BETs, SoundCity MVP Awards, The Headies, MOBO Awards, and more. He featured on Beyoncé’s soundtrack album “The Lion King: The Gift” in 2020.
