Biography

David Adedeji Adeleke popularly known as Davido is a Nigerian-American singer, Songwriter, contemporary artist, and record producer. He is regarded as one of the most influential artists out of Africa. He is famous for various hit songs including Skelewu, Fall, Fia, If, and has won several prestigious awards including BET Awards, MTV EMAs Award, a MOBO award, multiple Headies awards, SoundCity MVP awards and several others.

Early Life

David Adedeji Adeleke a.k.a Davido was born to Adedeji Adeleke, a business magnate and Vero Adeleke (late), a university lecturer. He is the youngest of 5 siblings and the second male child.

David attended British International School in Lagos, and moved to Alabama, US at the age of 16 to study Business Administration at Oakwood University. While at the university, he bought musical equipment and began making beats. He also formed the music act, KB International with his cousins, B-Red and Sina Rambo. He later dropped out of Oakwood University and moved to London to work on his vocals.

In 2011, Davido returned to Nigerian and pursued a music career. At the advice of his father, he enrolled at Babcock University and graduated with a degree in music in 2015. His father sponsored a music department for the inaugural class of one at the University.

Career

In 2011, Davido began working on his debut album “Omo Baba Olowo”. The album features a mixture of Afro Beats and Hip Hop. It also features guest appearances from Naeto C, Ice Prince, 2Baba and more. It was heavily panned by critics for its lyrical content but also became a success. The album’s first single “Back When” featuring Naeto C became a huge success after it was released. Its second single “Dami Duro” became an even bigger success in 2012. Davido also released Ekuro, Gobe, Skelewu, Aye, Tchelete featuring Mafikizolo and more.

In January 2016, Davido announced he had signed a record deal with Sony Music. The deal required him to release two albums and retain the rights to his music. He founded the Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) label a few months later.

In 2016, he released the 5-track EP “Son Of Mercy”. It was supported by the singles “Gbagbe Oshi”, “How Long” and “Coolest Kids In Africa” and features Simi, Tinashe, and Nasty C.

In 2017, Davido released “If”, a song produced and ghostwritten by Tekno. It became a crossover hit, and took him to the top of the charts. In June 2017, he released “Fall” a song which would go on to become his biggest hit in the US and in Canada. Its video is the most viewed by a Nigerian artist on YouTube. The song was followed by “Fia”, another raging success.

From 2019 to 2020, Davido collaborated with Popcaan on “Risky”, and Chris Brown on “Blow My Mind”. He also sold out the O2 Arena in London, and became the first solo African artist to do so. He released his second studio album “A Good Time” in November 2019. It has since garnered over 1 Billion streams across all platforms. His third album “A Better Time” was released in November 2020. It features contributions from Nicki Minaj, Nas, Lil Baby, Tiwa Savage and more. He announced on December 14th that the album had amassed 213.2 million streams in one month.

Davido is the father of three children. The first two daughters, Aurora Imade Adeleke and Hailey Veronica Adeleke are from two of his past relationships, while the third, a son, Ifeanyi Adeleke is with his fiancée, Chioma Avril Rowland.
