Emmerson Mnangagwa Biography

Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa is a Zimbabwean politician and current president of the impoverished southern African nation. He is one of six children born to Mhurai (mother) and Mafidhi (father).

His romance with politics dates back to the 70s. He was a national executive member of the ruling Zimbabwean African National Union–Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) and special assistant to the president.

Thereafter, he served as minister of state security and then snagged a role as Kwekwe East member of parliament. Soon enough, he became speaker of the same parliament.

He had held several other positions, including that of minister of justice and legal affairs. He lost that position following a cabinet reshuffle.

Interestingly, that same year, he would snag the presidency after the coup that deposed President Robert Mugabe and “Gucci Grace.”

Age

Emmerson Mnangagwa was born in 1942, which makes him 80 years at the time of writing.

Wife

The president is known to have had only two wives, the first of whom is no longer in the picture, having succumbed to cervical cancer in 2002. Jayne Matarise sired six children for her husband before her death.

Soon after her death, Emmerson married Auxilia. They are still together.

Emmerson Mnangagwa Biography 3

Children

If there is something as controversial as Emmerson Mnangagwa himself, it is most likely the number of children he has. While his publicist, via his official website, had given his number of children as 9, a Sunday Times report claimed that he has as many as 19 children

Net Worth

While he has made a small fortune (by Zimbabwean standards) from politics, Emmerson Mnangagwa would not be caught dead discussing his net worth. Well, the public has been doing the talking for him.

True or not, the estimate of his net worth is $10 million.

Salary

In Africa, it has been said that it is best not to ask how much a president – or politicians generally – earn because you’re most likely to be lied to. While they earn hefty sums, they usually give out numbers that would not provoke outrage from the poverty-lashed public.

Anyway, it is unclear exactly how much President Emmerson Mnangagwa earns. It must be something actually okay with him because he wouldn’t have stayed glued to power after the coup in which Robert Mugabe was deposed.

Political Party

Emmerson Mnangagwa is a member of the ruling Zimbabwean African National Union–Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF). ZANU–PF had Robert Mugabe, Joshua Nkomo, and Ndabaningi Sithole as founders. It came into being on 22 December 1963.

The power has been in power since Zimbabwean independence. It was previously known without the “PF” – a latter addition.

House & Cars

As president of Zimbabwe, though one of the most impoverished countries in the world, Emmerson Mnangagwa’s default residence is the presidential mansion. However, he has several other houses to his name.

He is, for instance, known to have an expensive white mansion in the Chief Mapanzure area, which is said to be under 24/7 security surveillance. He is also publicly known to have another house at Greystone Park in Harare.

Cars are status symbols for many, especially Africa’s power elite, and they have no qualms about splurging on some of the most expensive whips out there. It’s unclear which are Emmerson Mnangagwa’s personal cars, as he is most often rolling around town in his official Mercedes Benz S Class.

Emmerson Mnangagwa Biography 5

His government has faced severe criticisms following the buying of dozens of Range Rovers and Toyota pick-up trucks for civil servants and other officials, a gesture seen as an attempt to shore up support for his government.
