Biography

Enoch Godongwana is a South African politician. He has served as the Minister of Finance in the government of President Cyril Ramaphosa since August 2021. He is the current head of the African National Congress’s economic transformation subcommittee in the national executive committee (NEC).

Enoch Godongwana matriculated from St John’s College in Mthatha. In 1998, he obtained his MSc degree in Financial Economics from the University of London.

From 1979, Godongwana worked as a shop steward for the Metal and Allied Workers Union MAWU. From 1993 to 1996, he worked as the general secretary of the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA). From 1992 to 1997, he served on the Congress of South Africa’s Trade Unions (COSATU)’s executive and central committees.

From 2019 until 2012, Godongwana began serving as the deputy minister of public enterprises and deputy minister of economic development in the government of President Jacob Zuma. When Canyon Springs Investments’ matter was revealed by news outlets, he resigned from the post. Enoch Godongwana was accused by the United Democratic Movement of using his position in the DBSA to engage in corruption through companies he had a stake in.

Godongwana is a man that wears many hats. He is a director of a paper and packing company called Mondi, as well as a platinum miner Platinum Group Metals.

Enoch Godongwana chaired Canyon Springs Investments 12, a shell company. He and his wife jointly owned 50% of the company. According to reports, Canyon Springs was found to be involved in alleged defrauding of clothing factory workers of R100-million of their pension fund money (from 2007 until 2011).

It was also reported that his R1.5 million salary was drawn from money loaned by the South African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (Sactwu) to the company. The loaned money was reportedly never returned to the union. Godongwana claimed not to have known about the company’s money sources. Richard Kawie and Sam Buthelezi, two other co-owners of Canyons Springs Investment 12, were also hit with fraud cases for not repaying the money to the union.

Enoch Godongwana was accused of sexual assault in August 2022 by an employee at the Kruger National Park who offered massage services to guests in their private rooms. Godongwana’s office issued a statement denying the allegation. He repeated it to the police on Aug. 18. News outlets reported in mid-August that South African prosecutors were nearing a decision on whether to press charges against the Finance Minister.
