Biography
Dr. Gwen Malegwale Ramokgopa is a South African health practitioner, politician, and University Chancellor. She was the Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality from 2006 to 2010. She served as the MEC for Health in Gauteng from 1998 to 2006. After finishing her term as the Mayor of Tshwane, Ramokgopa was Deputy Minister of Health in the South African Government from November 2010 to May 2014. In 1995, she served as Chairperson of the executive committee of the former Pretoria City Council. She is the Chancellor of the Tshwane University of Technology.

Career:
In 1995, Dr. Gwen Ramokgopa was the Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the former Pretoria City Council. She worked as a medical officer at Ga-Rankuwa Hospital and later became the National Health Programme Manager at the Independent Development Trust. Later, she quit her medical practice to focus on her political ambitions. She has since held positions in the healthcare sector.
Between 2006 and 2010, she served as the Mayor Of Tshwane. Her tenure as Mayor was regarded as the worst in the country. According to reports, the City failed to deliver effective public services like housing, water, security, etc. Also, services like sanitation weren’t rendered effectively. Tshwane owned R37 billion in 2009.
Gwen became the Deputy Health Minister in 2010. She served until 2014 and later held the position of Gauteng MEC. She became the Chancellor of the Tshwane University of Technology in 2015. She also serves as a Member of the Executive Council of Health for the Gauteng Provincial Government.
Current Position
As of early December 2022, Gwen Ramokgopa is an ANC Treasure General hopeful. On 19 December, Gwen Ramapkgopa took the position with the most votes, 1,809. The current ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe came in second with 1,622 votes.

Gwen Malegwale Ramokgopa is the aunt of Kgosientso “Sputla” Ramokgopa, former Tshwane regional chairperson. In 2010, he was picked as the favourite to replace her as the Mayor of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in 2010. In 2109, the former Gauteng Economic MEC was appointed to head the president’s investment infrastructure office.
Family
Gwen Ramokgopa is happily married to Allen Lephoko. The couple is blessed with three children. They are also grandparents. Their family once trended for the wrong reasons. Independent Online reported that they and their bodyguards harassed photographers and reporters at Hatfield Community Court in 2009. They had made an appearance for their daughter’s trial for alleged drug possession when Allen and their bodyguards roughed up some photographers and reporters.
He grabbed Daniel Born (who worked for The Times) by the collar and assaulted him. According to reports, the incident happened after the couple had snuck their daughter Lerato Lephoko in and out of court through cells.
Qualifications
Dr. Gwen Ramokgopa holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (MEDUNSA). She also has a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, also from the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (MEDUNSA).
Education
Dr. Gwen Malegwale Ramokgopa matriculated at Phiri Kolobe High School. She later obtained an MBChB and an MPH degree at MEDUNSA north of Pretoria, now Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University.
