Biography

Temetrius Jamel, professionally known as Ja Morant, is an American professional basketball player for the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Morant played college basketball for the Murray State Racers, where he was a consensus first-team All-American as a sophomore in 2019. In the 2019 NBA draft, he was selected by the Grizzlies as the second overall pick. And in 2020, Morant was named the NBA Rookie of the Year. In 2022, he was named to his first NBA All-Star Game as a starter and won the NBA Most Improved Player Award at the conclusion of the season. In 2022, he was selected to his first All-NBA Team.

Morant’s athleticism often draws comparisons to Russell Westbrook. Morant has said Westbrook is his favorite player because he is often overlooked, just like he was by college recruiters in high school. He has a tattoo with the words “beneath no one.” It’s an advice his mother gave him.

Controversy

Ja Morant was named a defendant in a lawsuit in Shelby County, Tennessee. In the suit, he was accused by the plaintiff of punching a 17-year-old male during a pickup basketball at his home in July of that year. It revealed that the 17-year-old and Morant had engaged in a verbal altercation during the game, during which the 17-year-old “accidentally” hit him. Morant punched the 17-year-old, knocking him to the ground. Then, he struck him a few more times. Morant claimed he acted in self-defense. He stated that the 17-year-old had threatened him immediately following the incident.

In March 2023, The Memphis Grizzlies suspended Morant after he brandished a firearm while filming himself on Instagram Live. His suspension was reported to be indefinite.
