Born 25 November 1987, Khayelihle Nkosinathi Mthethwaalso popularly known by his stage name Khaya Mthethwa (also known as The PK) is a prolific South African singer, songwriter, musician, composer and the multi-instrumentalist. His genre of music is between Gospel, Pop and Jazz.
Khaya Mthethwa is known for being the first black to win the Idols TV show. He is also a member of the popular “Joyous Celebration Gospel group” which is popular all across Africa. He was ordained a pastor in 2015.
FAMILY AND BEGINNING
Khaya Mthethwa is originally from Umlazi, Durban in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The singer is born to pastors’ Themba and Lulu Mthethwa. Being born to a religious parent shaped his love and passion for music.
Khaya Mthethwa’s love for music started as far back as high school and he really wanted to pursue it after his high school education but got stopped by his parents who wanted him to complete his education.
EDUCATION
Khaya Mthethwa after his matric, got enrolled to study project management at the Varsity College. His love for music still urged him to be a choir leader in his college days.
MUSICAL MILESTONE
Khaya Mthethwa got his major breakthrough when he won the 8th edition of the South African idol in 2012. Although music for him started way back, when he showed interest in music as a young boy.
Khaya Mthethwa appeared as a backing vocalist singing on Joyous Celebration’s co-founder Mthunzi Namba’s Mercy album. He also appeared as a back up vocalist again on Ntokozo Mbambo’s “Filled” album in 2012 (again as a backing vocalist).
Khaya Mthethwa also participated in another TV competition titled “The Clash of the Choirs” in 2013. He came on board as part of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Choir and his group ended up winning the competition.
Khaya Mthethwa has since then grown himself as a solo artist and has released top notch songs and studio projects over the years.
