Biography

Malusi Booi is a well-known South African politician. He is a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA). He was the 187th Candidate at Democratic Alliance National Election List 2014 and the  55th Candidate at Democratic Alliance Provincial Gauteng Election List 2014. Booi was a City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee member for Human Settlements. In March 2023, he was suspended by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis following a search and seizure operation that took place on March 15 at City offices. Booi served as the General Secretary for Cope Youth Movement. He was called “the engine of the Congress of the People Youth Movement.”

Suspension

In mid-March 2023, Press reported that police raided human settlements mayco member Malusi Booi’s City of Cape Town offices in the Civic Centre. The operation was led by the SAPS Commercial Crimes Unit due to ongoing investigations into allegations of fraud worth millions of Rand regarding housing tenders.

SAPS seized gadgets and documents from the offices in the raid. Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed it. Mayor of Cape Town Geordin Hill-Lewis reportedly vowed to take firm action against fraud and corruption in his ranks. He suspended Booi in response to the raid and appointed Alderman James Vos as acting Mayco member for Human Settlements.

The mayor said, “The SAPS informed me this morning that the investigation is at an early stage but is potentially serious and relates to alleged fraud and corruption and that further details cannot be disclosed at this time.

“As a result, I have suspended councillor Booi from his position on the Mayoral committee. In the interim, I have appointed Alderman James Vos as acting Mayco member for Human Settlements.

“I have further assured the SAPS of the City’s full support in the ongoing investigation. The City has a zero tolerance approach to fraud and corruption and will not hesitate to act in the interests of good governance.”
