Biography
Mi Casa is a popular House trio or music band based in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is made up of three members, Joao da Fonseca aka J’Something (vocalist and guitarist), Sipho Philemon Mphahlaza aka Dr. Duda (producer), and Moshe Philip Kgasoane aka Mo-T (trumpeter). The band was formed in Johannesburg in early 2011 when all three future members visited a night lounge and decided to perform together. They have released 4 successful albums and won several awards most of which was at the Annual MTN South Africa Music Awards in 2012.
J’Something is originally from Portugal and moved to Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape, South Africa when he was 7 years old. After his parents separated, he was raised by his mother, Maria.
Mo-T’s father, Kgasoane Banza was part of the popular Afropop band, Mango Groove.
Dr. Duda is the band’s producer. As a child, he was part of a gospel band at his childhood church from the age of 8. He played the keyboard at the time. His nickname was coined by a FL Studio plug-in called “Duda”.
Family & Beginnings
Mi Casa is a House band made up of three members Dr. Duda, J’Something, and Mo-T. The three members met at a night lounge in early 2011 where they decided to perform together. That became the beginning of the band. Months after their performance at the lounge, the trio recorded and released their debut album titled “Mi Casa Music”. The album was quickly certified Gold, and was nominated for several awards at the 18th Annual MTN South Africa Music Awards where it won some of them.
In 2015, the band returned with their second album, a double disc album titled “Home Sweet Home”. The album included the hit singles “Chocolate” and “Barman” which featured Big Nuz and DJ Tira.
Their fourth studio album, “Familia” was released in August 2017 after they nearly disbanded four months earlier. The band has stuck around over the years, finally coming back in full form in 2020 with new music.
Education
The members of the band have not been vocal about their education. They mostly focus on talking about their music. However, J’Something completed his bachelor’s degree in marketing at Stellenbosch University.
Musical Milestones
After the band was formed in 2011, they gained a lot of popularity with the release of their hit single “These Streets” which was taken from their debut album “Mi Casa Music”. The album showcased urban jazz sound which was unique to them.
The song became hugely popular in South Africa, appearing on major radio stations, with the music video charting at number 1 for many weeks. The band opened for several major international acts including The Layabouts, Tortured Soul, Canadian Hip Hop and pop artist, Drake, and Reel People. The album’s second single “Heavenly Sent” was also a success.
Their debut album earned them several nominations at the South African Music Awards including “Best Dance Album”, “Album of the Year”, “Group of the Year”, “Newcomer of the Year”, and “Record of the Year”.
Their nomination for “Newcomer of the Year” was met with a lot of controversy when people mentioned that the band’s producer, Dr Duda had been around for a bit. The band was also first recognized internationally when their song was remixed by Charles Webster.

Mi Casa is known for their amazing stage performances. The trio has performed at major shows and events across South Africa and even outside the country. Although they have an official Instagram account, they each have personal ones. The most active on social media is J’Something who boasts over 248,000 followers on Instagram alone.
Relationships
Members of the trio have chosen to keep their romantic relationships away from the public eye. The most public relationship of the three is J’Something’s who married the love of his life, Cordelia in 2015. They dated for a couple of years before they tied the knot, and have been blessed with a son who was born in 2017.
