Family & Beginnings
Mi Casa is a House band made up of three members Dr. Duda, J’Something, and Mo-T. The three members met at a night lounge in early 2011 where they decided to perform together. That became the beginning of the band. Months after their performance at the lounge, the trio recorded and released their debut album titled “Mi Casa Music”. The album was quickly certified Gold, and was nominated for several awards at the 18th Annual MTN South Africa Music Awards where it won some of them.
In 2015, the band returned with their second album, a double disc album titled “Home Sweet Home”. The album included the hit singles “Chocolate” and “Barman” which featured Big Nuz and DJ Tira.
Their fourth studio album, “Familia” was released in August 2017 after they nearly disbanded four months earlier. The band has stuck around over the years, finally coming back in full form in 2020 with new music.
The members of the band have not been vocal about their education. They mostly focus on talking about their music. However, J’Something completed his bachelor’s degree in marketing at Stellenbosch University.
After the band was formed in 2011, they gained a lot of popularity with the release of their hit single “These Streets” which was taken from their debut album “Mi Casa Music”. The album showcased urban jazz sound which was unique to them.
The song became hugely popular in South Africa, appearing on major radio stations, with the music video charting at number 1 for many weeks. The band opened for several major international acts including The Layabouts, Tortured Soul, Canadian Hip Hop and pop artist, Drake, and Reel People. The album’s second single “Heavenly Sent” was also a success.
Their debut album earned them several nominations at the South African Music Awards including “Best Dance Album”, “Album of the Year”, “Group of the Year”, “Newcomer of the Year”, and “Record of the Year”.
Their nomination for “Newcomer of the Year” was met with a lot of controversy when people mentioned that the band’s producer, Dr Duda had been around for a bit. The band was also first recognized internationally when their song was remixed by Charles Webster.
