Murunwa Makwarela is a South African politician, member of the Congress of the People (COPE) and current mayor of the city of Tshwane.

A man of many parts – academic, genetic engineer, businessman and politician – Murunwa Makwarela has only just been elected mayor of Tshwane, beating Cilliers Brink, a councillor of the democratic alliance. Before his election, he had obtained a PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand and served as the chief executive officer of Tahal South Africa Pty.

However, it is for his role as the mayor of the city of Tshwane that he is better known. His mantra is to serve his people to the best of his ability.

The current mayor of the city of Tshwane is a member of a political party called Congress of the People which is abbreviated COPE. COPE is one of the recent manifestations in South African politics. as it only came into existence in 2008. It was founded by Mbhazima Shilowa, Mluleki George, and Mosiuoa Lekota, who happens to be former top members of the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
