Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was born on 27 January 1949, to a Zulu family in Natal, in the Union of South Africa. Nkosazana’s father, Willibrod Gweva, was a teacher [his brother Stephen Dlamini was an activist in the African National Congress (ANC)] while her mother, Rose, was a homemaker. She was born the eldest of eight children. Nkosazana celebrated her 73rd birthday on 27 January 2022.
Husband
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma married former South African president Jacob Zuma in 1982. However, Dlamini-Zuma divorced Zuma in June 1998, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple had four daughters together.
Education
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma completed her high school education in Amanzimtoti at Adams College, a mission school attended by many ANC faithfuls. She matriculated from high school in 1967. She had initially wanted to become a lawyer but indulged her father’s eagerness for her to become a doctor. Nkosazana earned a BSc degree in zoology and botany from the University of Zululand in 1971.
Later, she went to the University of Natal, where she studied medicine. She went into exile in 1976 when her political activities began to attract police attention. She then finished medical studies in the United Kingdom, graduating with an MBChB from the University of Bristol in 1978. Dlamini-Zuma returned to the United Kingdom in 1985 to complete a diploma in tropical child health at Liverpool University’s School of Tropical Medicine.

The third, Nokuthula Nomaqhawe, was born in 1987, while their last daughter Thuthukile was born in 1989. She was reportedly controversially appointed Chief of Staff in the Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services in 2014.
Net Worth
The exact estimate of Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma’s net worth is unknown to the general public. However, her successful career as a medical doctor and politician has earned her a lot of money through the years. Recall that she is also the chancellor of the University of Limpopo. Savannanews reported that the net worth of “the former African Union chairperson is reportedly valued at R1.6 billion in 2020.” This is an unconfirmed estimate because neither she nor anyone on her team has said a thing about it.
Previous Offices
From 1994-1999, Dlamini-Zuma served as the Minister of Health. From 1999 to 2009, she served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs under the presidents Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe. From 2009–2012, she served as the Minister of Home Affairs. She became chairperson of the African Union from 2012 till 2017. Dlamini-Zuma’s leadership as chairperson was considered a disappointing failure. In February 2018, she was appointed Dlamini-Zuma Minister in the Presidency with responsibility for Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation by President Cyril Ramaphosa. She was moved to the head of the Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs by Ramaphosa following his re-election in 2019.
