Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius is a South African athlete and former Paralympian who charmed the world with his on-pitch power but eventually plummeted into infamy after he shot his girlfriend through the door of his bathroom in his Pretoria home. The year was 2013.

Born with a congenital defect on both feet, which were amputated when he was just 11 months old, Oscar Pistorius wouldn’t let the tragedy hold him back, as he fought his way into the Paralympic universe, ultimately ending up as multiple Paralympic champion.

This made him a darling to many around the world. But this appears to be a distant, unbidden memory now following his conviction for murder.

Valentine’s Day, 2013, came but it was a day entirely without laughter, love and flowers, as it was exactly when Oscar Pistorius gunned Reeva Steenkamp through the bathroom door of his apartment. He claimed he thought it was an intruder who was hiding in there.

The case went to court and although he was convicted for Reeva’s murder, he never admitted he murdered her – a potent reason Reeva’s parents are reportedly not amenable to meet him.

The murder case has been of great interest and has polarised South Africans, with some insisting that he should rot in jail for murder, and others stating the state should grant him parole, having served 10 years behind bars, as enshrined in law.

Release Date
