Paul Shipokosa Mashatile, popularly called Paul Mashatile, is a South African politician. He is currently the Treasurer General and acting Secretary General of the governing African National Congress (ANC). Between 2008 and 2009, Paul served briefly as the premier of the Gauteng Province. He also held several ministerial portfolios in the Gauteng Province between 1996 and 2008, and 2014 and 2018.

He was formerly an anti-apartheid activist on the United Democratic Front. Mashatile was a member of President Jacob Zuma’s first cabinet, during which he served as the Minister of Arts and Culture (2010 – 2014). Between 2007 and 2017, he was the ANC provincial chairperson. Paul has remained influential in the Gauteng Province.

Previous Offices

Mashatile was elected to the Gauteng provincial legislature in South Africa’s democratic elections in 1994. He became the leader of the house.

Two years later, he served in the provincial cabinet for thirteen years (as MEC for Transport and Public Works and then for Safety and Security). Mashatile occupied high-profile portfolios as MEC for Human Settlements (1999–2004) and for Finance and Economic Affairs (2004–2008) under Premier Mbhazina Shilowa. He was elected deputy Provincial chairperson of the Gauteng ANC in 1998. He was elected to the party’s chairmanship in November 2007.

Mashatile served for less than a year as Gauteng’s premier in 2008. He was appointed deputy Minister of Arts and Culture under Jacob Zuma. He was re-elected as ANC provincial chairperson in May 2010. He was promoted to Minister of Arts and Culture by President Zuma in October 2010. He was re-elected as ANC Gauteng chairperson in October 2014. He became ANC Treasurer General in 2018. Mashatile was appointed acting ANC Secretary-General in January 2022.
