Biography
Portia Modise is a South African footballer and athlete. She was named Player of the Championship at the 2006 Women’s African Football Championship. Portia represented the South Africa national team at the London Olympics in 2012. She made history when she became the first African player to score 100 international goals.
Portia started playing football with boys in her neighborhood. Her love for the sport grew more. She played for the Soweto Rangers Under-10, women’s section of Jomo Cosmos, and then moved to Soweto ladies in 1996. She worked as an academy coach for the Orlando Pirates (2005-2006). She was the captain of the South Africa Under-19 national team (Basetsane Basetsane) and later joined the senior team. In October 2012, Modise was named in the South African squad for the 2012 African Women’s Championship. After playing 124 matches and scoring 101 goals for South Africa, she retired from international football in May 2015.
Modise slammed Ria Ledwaba’s (head of the women’s committee at the South African Football Association) plans to send players to etiquette workshops and supply tighter kit to increase their femininity. She said,
“We need sponsors but all the committee does is raise less important issues because they have failed to transform the sport.”

Portia Modise is not married.
