Biography
Raymond Mnyamezeli Mlungisi Zondo, popularly called Ray Zondo, is a South African judge. Since 2022, Zondo has served as the Chief Justice of South Africa. He was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa as the new Chief Justice of the country. He took over office on 1 April 2022. From 11 October 2022 until 31 March 2022, Zondo served as acting Chief Justice following the retirement of Mogoeng Mogoeng.
Career;
In 1997, Zondo was appointed a judge of the Labour Court. He was assigned to the Transvaal Provincial Division of the High Court two years later. He was elevated to judge president of the Labour Court in 2000. He served in the post for ten years and returned to the Pretoria High Court in 2010. Zondo served as an acting judge of the Constitutional Court from November 2011 to May 2012.
Effective in September 2012, he was permanently appointed to the position. He was considered a key member with Chris Jafta, of the court’s conservative wing. President Jacob Zuma appointed Zondo to the office of Deputy Chief Justice in June 2017. He succeeded Dikgang Moseneke, who retired in 2016. President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Zondo as the new Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa (effective 1 April) on 10 March 2022.
