Divine Ikubor popularly known as Rema is a Nigerian Afro Beats singer, songwriter, and rapper. He rose to prominence following the release of his song “Iron Man” which was included in Barack Obama’s Summer Playlist. Rema is also known for the popular Afro Beats hit song “Dumebi”. He won the Next Rated artist award at The Headies in 2020. He has also been nominated for various awards include a BET Awards, a MOBO Award, and several other awards.


Rema was born on the first day of May, 2000. He is 29 years old.

Early Life

Divine Ikubor was born and raised in Benin City, Edo State. He grew up in a christian family and began singing and rapper while in secondary school. He also attended primary and secondary school in Edo State. He was a member of the Believers LoveWorld Ministeries, a church founded by Nigerian pastor, Chris Oyakhilome. He revealed that at the time, his dream was to sing at the main church auditorium. Divine Ikubor has also lived in while in search for greener pastures.


In 2018, Rema posted a video of himself of himself freestyling to Nigerian singer, D’Prince’s song “Gucci Gang” to Instagram. The video caught D’Prince’s attention who flew him to Lagos, and offered him a record deal.

In 2019, Rema signed a deal with D’Prince’s Jonzing World Records, a subsidiary of Mavin Records. Following the departure of from Mavin, Rema was added to the Mavin roster. At the time, the popular Afro Beats star, Tiwa Savage was still at the label. Mavin also boasts of various other popular artists including Korede Bello, DNA, Ladipoe, Dija, Dr Sid, and D’Prince.

At the time Rema was included to the Mavin roster, he was described as the future of Afro Beats. D’Prince also described him as a craftsman whose work needed to be heard. In the same year, he released his debut eponymous EP, “Rema”. The peaked at number 1 on Apple Music Nigeria.

Also, in 2019, Rema’s song “Dumebi” became a massive hit. Topping the charts and receiving massive airplay on the radio. A remix for the song featuring Becky G was also released.

In October 2019, he won the Next Rated artist at The Headies Awards. In 2020, he was nominated for the BET Awards Best New International Act but lost to Sha Sha.


Rema is known to be very private about his personal life. In 2020, he announced that he would be taking a female fan out on a date. The fan turned out to be Instagram influencer, Nimie. Their outing was hugely publicized and trended heavily on Twitter.


Rema has revealed that he began making money even becoming a music star. After spending time working in Ghana, he bought his mom an SUV with part of the money he saved up. It was also reported that Rema was paid handsomely for his first gig which is very unheard of in the Nigerian music industry.
