Biography

Simphiwe Nhlangulela popularly known as Simmy is a South African singer, and songwriter known for her Electronic dance, Neo Soul and Experimental Pop music. She gained widespread attention following the release of her debut studio album “Tugela Fairy” in 2018.

Not much is known about Simmy’s Childhood but she has revealed that she was born and raised in Tugela, KwaZulu-Natal, in South Africa. In an interview with Emmanuel Tjiya of the Sowetan Newspaper, she revealed that she was raised by strict and very old parents. She is the youngest of 4 children.

She studied Social Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Pursuing a career as a musician, Simmy auditioned for several singing competitions including SA Idols and SA’s Got Talent but none of them proved successful.

In an interview with Apple Music, Simmy revealed that she met Sun-El Musician in 2013 through his younger brother. She revealed that he asked her to sing for him, and then suggested that they work on something together. However, she opted to finish her studies first before recording music.

After completing her studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, she moved to Johannesburg and signed a deal with Sun-El Musician’s record label, El World Music in 2017. Her debut album “Tugela Fairy” was released in 2018 earning great reception from music lovers. A month after the release, she appeared on Apple Music‘s New Artist Spotlight.

She has revealed that her sound is inspired by a fusion of Maskandi, RnB, Country music, Neo Soul and Electro House music. Her biggest music inspirations are Letta Mbulu and Dolly Parton. She has also revealed that her dream collaborations would be with SA Hip Hop artist, Sjava and Thandiswa Mazwai.

Simmy told Apple Music that the reason her sound is inspired by Maskandi and Country music is because her father loved both genres and played them while she grew up. Her brother also influenced her love for RnB and House music.

Although the specific date of her birth is unknown, Simmy told Apple Music that she was 24 in 2018. She was born in 1994. Even her Wikipedia says so. She will be 27 years old this year (2021).

Simmy is known to keep her personal life to herself. She has never opened up about her romantic relationships or the things happening in her personal life. She rarely even posts on social media except when necessary.

In 2017, after her studies, Simmy signed a record deal with EL World Music, a label founded by South African DJ and producer, Sun-El Musician. A little after her signing, her debut album “Tugela Fairy” was released via the label. She has also collaborated with Sun-El on some popular songs released via the label.
