Biography
Siyamthanda Kolisi popularly called Siya Kolisi is a South African professional Rugby union player. He currently is the captain of the South Africa National team. Siya Kolisi also played club rugby for the Stormers in Super Rugby and Western Province in the Currie Cup. Siya generally plays as a flanker.
Siya Kolisi is also the first black South African rugby captain for an international team, Stormers. He became the first black man to hold the position in 2018, and led the South African Rugby team to victory in the 2019 Rugby World Cup Final against England.
In December, 2019, New African magazine included Kolisi in its list of the 100 Most Influential Africans.
Family & Beginnings
Siya Kolisi was born in the impoverished Township of Zwide where he grew up. His mother, Phakama was 17 and his father, Fezakele was in his final year of school when he was born. Kolisi lost his mother when he was 15 and was raised by his late grandmother, Nolulamile.
He has revealed that he grew up poor. After impressing scouts at a youth tournament in Mossel Bay at the age of 12, he was offered a scholarship to Grey High school. He was a regular member of the first XV rugby team, and a member of the Eastern Province Kings. He also represented the school team, South Africa national under-18 rugby union team.
Siya Kolisi has also revealed that his father was away for the better part of his childhood.
Wife & Children
Siya Kolisi is married to Rachel Smith with whom he biologically has 2 adorable children. The couple dated for years before the tied the knot. Despite being the centre of discussion for being a year older than Siya, Rachel has taken good care of her man.
She revealed that she was a bit turned off by him when they first met. She recalls it to be at a dinner with mutual friends in Stellenbosch. However, they became good friends later after which she says realized she “needed” him in her life.
Together with Rachel, Siya has two children but the couple adopted Siya’s late mother’s children Liyema and Liphelo. The family is really close to one another.
Career
Siya Kolisi began his career as a professional rugby player at The Vodacom Cup Match between Golden Lione and Western Province. He was also a part of the Currie Cup in the same year.
Following his graduation, he joined the Stormers squad and registered the best performance during the first half of the year. He made 2 score tries and had 13 appearances. This earned himself international recognition, after which he became part of the Springbok 2013 Rugby Championship squad.
On February 20, 2013, he was appointed captain for the Stormers rugby club. He made history as the first black captain of the National team after 126 years.
Siya Kolisi has also played in several international matches including the match between South Africa and Japan in 2015.
