Biography

Takura Bernard Shonhai known mononymously as Takura is a Zimbabwean Hip Hop artist. He was born and raised in Kingsdale, Bulawayo.

While living in Gweru in 2013, he formed the group, Soul Afrika with his best friend, Donald Mapholisa. Mapholisa left the grew after he got married because the music business was not paying much at the time. His exit prompted Takura to move to Harare taking his then manager, Tytan’s advice. In Harare, he was joined by Adrian Tate who was Cynthia Mare’s guitar player at the time.

The group released several hit songs including Zvinhu”, “Gule Kwete”, “Newe” and “Pauri”, which did well on radio and other platforms. They also released an album titled “Ndimi Dzerudo”. The project made them a certified duo in the music scene. The group disbanded after the release of their album.

Takura left to focus on a solo career. He switched from being an Afro pop artist, to a Hip Hop act.  He later released the songs “Zino Irema” and “MaObama” which made him into a household name. In 2016, he released an EP called “Stripped” which features the songs “Mungandidi”, “Mari Hairambwe” and “Ndoda Kutaura Newe”. In less than a year, Takura became a well known solo artist in Zimbabwe.

In 2016, he was named one of the Top 10 African rappers by South African Hip Hop Magazine alongside top rappers, Kwesta, Nasty C, Emtee, Phyno, AKA and Casper Nyovest. In 2018, he released his debut album “SHTDi (Someone Had To Do It)”, and it also became a success.

In 2020, Takura shared a photo of his girlfriend, Charmaine Chasweka aka Cha Char. She is a TV presenter for Zimpapers TV Network, a writer, a Voice over artist, and a brand ambassador.

Takura is a father of one. He has a daughter named April with his ex-girlfriend. He shares photos of her on his social media accounts, and writes the sweetest messages on her birthdays.
