Tania Lynette Campbell is a Democratic Alliance politician from South Africa. She has served as the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since November 8, 2022. From November 2021, she had served for 11 months until her removal in a motion of no confidence in October 2022. At the time, she was voted out after being accused of denying services to the residents of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. Her re-election was widely accepted.

Political Career

Tania Campbell started her political journey by joining the Democratic Alliance in 1997. In 2000, she became a councilor when the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality was established. In 2006, Tania was elected as the ward Councillor for Ward 21 (Primrose). She was retained in the 2011 elections. She was elected chairperson of the DA caucus in the metro in 2013. Three years later, she was also appointed as DA Chief Whip. According to more reports, during her time in office, she also served on numerous oversights in Ekurhuleni. She was elected as DA caucus leader in October 2020. She was elected after the resignation of the incumbent, Phillip de Lange, following a motion of no confidence which was brought against him by the caucus.

In November 2021, Tania Campbell was nominated by the DA as their candidate in the election for mayor against the incumbent, Mzwandile Masina, from the African National Congress (ANC). Tania won with 116 votes over Masina’s 105 votes. She became the first DA member to serve as Executive Mayor of the metro. During an interview, she stated that she was shocked that she was elected. She also revealed that her tenure would be tough because the DA does not hold a majority of seats in the council. In her inaugural address as mayor, Campbell stated that she would be focusing on service delivery issues in the metro.

In an ANC-sponsored motion of no confidence, Campbell was voted out as Mayor in October 2022. 100 councilors voted for Campbell’s removal, while 93 voted against it. The Economic Freedom Fighters abstained from voting. She was voted back in as Mayor of Ekurhuleni on November 8, 2022, after attaining 124 of the 224 votes. A ballot was spoilt. Reports revealed that the EFF had voted with the DA and its coalition partners to re-elect her. According to Wikipedia, “Coalition talks between the ANC and EFF had failed to reach an agreement, with the ANC’s provincial executive committee (PEC) rejecting a proposal for the election of an EFF mayor in the metro, paving the way for Campbell to return as mayor.”
