Tawana Kupe Biography

Tawana Kupe is a South African academic and former vice-chancellor of the University of Pretoria. He recently stepped down from the position, months ahead of the end of his tenure, invariably popping across media headlines in the Rainbow Nation.

The son of school teachers, Prof. Kupe holds his parents in high esteem and describes them as the first academics he knows. Their devotion to teaching watered his academic dream – to become a professor. After stints in his birth country Zimbabwe, where he obtained both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, he travelled out of the country for his PhD, which he obtained on time.

Before he left, though, he taught English at the University of Zimbabwe. He also taught at the Rhodes University in Grahamstown, ultimately rising – rally taking up an appointment – as vice-chancellor of the Univerity of Pretoria

Mrs Kupe had largely stayed away from the limelight. so not much is known about her. She is a big supporter of her husband’s academic adventures, though, and was a housewife for a period when her husband accepted an appointment at Rhodes University.

By South African standards, vice-chancellors earn pretty high, with annual pay running into millions. It is, however, unclear exactly how much Prof. Kupe earned while serving as the University of Pretoria vice-chancellor. A report by Business Tech put South Africa’s vice-chancellor salaries in a range between R2,991,000 and R4,907,529. So he likely earned something in that range at UP.

Career At the University of Pretoria

He stands out as one of those who had a great affinity for education from when he was young. But this isn’t even surprising given that he was born to teacher parents with a pronounced focus on education.

Kupe only became a vice-chancellor after he became a professor and after several years of teaching in his field of interest. About the choice of Kupe, the chairperson of the University of Pretoria Council had this to say:

“We believe that Professor Kupe comes to the position with considerable experience at executive level and is the best candidate to lead the University into the future.”

Toward the end of 2018, he was appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Pretoria, becoming the first black man to occupy the position in the institution’s history. He held that position until 2023 when his tenure was supposed to expire. But he resigned ahead of the time.
