Tellaman Biography

Tellaman is a self-taught South African singer, songwriter and record producer born in Durban. After a lot of encouragement by his mother, and knowledge gotten from Church and a youth choir, he decided to pursue music on his own. He began writing songs, and producing his own music at the age of 15.

Later on, he signed to Soul Candi Records and was featured on the label’s compilation album titled Soul Candi Sessions 15 alongside MoFlava, Lulo Café, Cuebur, and Hareal Salko. He achieved massive recognition when he featured South African rapper, Okmalumkoolkat on the hit song “Drinks and Music” off the project “Ntsikelelo“.

He is also known for various other hit singles including “Intoxicated” featuring Lastee, “I’m Gone” featuring Nasty C, “Whipped” featuring Shekinah and Nasty C, and lots more. He is credited to have collaborated with various notable names including Da L.E.S, Kwesta, DJ Speedsta, J’Something, and more. Tellaman has released a total of four musical projects and has been nominated for a few awards including Best Compilation Award at the 2015 Metro FM Awards.

Family & Beginnings

Tellaman was born and raised in Durban, South Africa. At an early age, his mother spotted his interest in music and encouraged him. She had him singer in at home, in church and also encouraged him to join a youth choir. He taught himself to play various music instruments, to produce music and also how to write songs.

At the age of 15, he decided to pursue a career in music and began writing his own songs and recording his own music from his bedroom. Years later, he got his big break in 2014 when he signed to Soul Candi Records and featured on the label’s compilation album titled “Soul Candi Sessions 15″.

His exceptional music talent intrigued the label’s producers a lot. This led to him being featured on 12 songs out of the 30 on the compilation record.

The album also featured contributions from MoFlava, Lulo Café, Cuébur, and Hareal Salko.

His disc, titled Ntsikelelo featured a few hit songs including contributions from Okmalumkoolkat on “Drinks and Music”, and Lastee on “Intoxicated”. The label’s compilation album became a hit and passed Gold status. It was nominated for the Best Compilation Award at the 2015 Metro FM Awards but didn’t win.

Musical Milestones

Tellaman is a self-taught musician who is best known to have created all of his first musical releases from the comfort of his bed room. After signing to Soul Candi Records, he was featured on 12 out of 30 songs of the label’s compilation album.

He has received a lot of recognition for his unique production skills, and his knowledge about music. He got his major breakthrough when he collaborated with Mzansi rapper, Okmalumkoolkat on the song “Drinks and Music” which was his first major single. About the collaboration, he said

“Okmalum was my first major feature. It was quite a dope experience to have him on my first single”.

Soul Candi Sessions 15 (2014)

Tellaman’s career took off majorly in 2014 after the Soul Candi Sessions 15 Compilation Album was released. It was nominated for a Best Compilation Award at the 2015 Metro FM Awards.

Mind Vs Heart (2016)

In June 2016, he released his first individual project, a mixtape titled “Mind Vs Heart“. It was released via Select Play Music. The project announced him as a solo musician in his own might. He said about the project, “I can say that I am proud of Mind Vs Heart because I basically did everything myself; from producing to songwriting to mixing”. 

He stated that the project was for his fans as it had been so long since he released anything. The mixtape featured a mixture of various sounds which illustrated his musical prowess. A while before the project was released, he  featured on DJ Speedsta’s hit song “Mayo“.

He revealed that the feature made people take better note of him. However, the recording to the song was marred by the unfortunate death of his little brother. It amazed him that the track still got a lot of positive revealed even after he didn’t have much time to record.

Lucid Dream (2017)

In February 2017, Tellaman released the R&B and Soul EP, Lucid Dream via his label, Tellaman Music. It contained 11 tracks and featured contributions from Nasty C, Frank Casino, Erick Rush, and J’Something of Mi Casa. The project was produced by him, Nasty c and Gobbla.

God Decides (2019)

After signing to Universal Music Group, Tellaman released the God Decides album which explored the ups and downs of love. The project housed a total of 20 songs and featured contributions Rowlene, Tay Iwar, Shekinah and Nasty C.

He has also appeared on various features including Kwesta’s “Act Like” and Nasty C’s “Don’t B.A.B” among many others.

Tellaman’s Relationships

Tellaman is credited to have dated South African actor, Nandi Mbatha in 2019 after which the couple parted ways in January 2020. Nandi was said to have moved on with Mpho Motsi, junior creative at Quiteria Atelier.
