Biography

Zandile Ruth Thelma Gumede, professionally called Zandile Gumede, is a politician from South Africa. She has served as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislature since 2020. From 2016 to 2019, Gumede served as the Executive Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Zandile Gumede has been a member of the African National Congress for many years. She is also the current Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the eThekwini Region.

Gumede is the daughter of a police officer. She started as a ward councilor. Then, she became an executive committee member and chairperson of the Community and Emergency Services Committee. She was later elected as a proportional representative (PR) councilor for two terms. Next, she became Amaoti’s councilor. From 2007 to 2015, she served as treasurer of the eThekwini Municipality.

She worked in different community development organizations in Inanda. This includes the Inanda Civic Association, Inanda Development Forum, CPF, and a health organization. Her flair for purchasing armored cars has raised a lot of concern. Gumede served as the mayor of Durban until 2019, when she began facing several court trials. The people nominated Mxolisi Kaunda and begged Gumede to resign. The ANC reported on August 16, 2019, that they had received her resignation. She withdrew it two days later, following advice from her lawyers in light of the criminal charges she was facing.

South African criminal investigation unit, the Hawks, included Gumede in forensic investigations in December 2018. The investigations were about fraud, money laundering, and corruption during her tenure. She was also accused of involvement in alleged illegal tender awards, creating fake employment, and various other matters.

Gumede appeared in the Special Commercial Crimes court in Durban on 14 May 2019. She was released on R50,000 bail pending further court appearances.
