J-Smash – The Truth ft. Thato Saul, Kwesta, Flow Jones Jr & YoungstaCpt

It’s 2023 & we are yet to see the fully-fledged comeback of Hip Hop that was promising in 2022 but the New School has clearly shown us that a new wave of artistry surely awaits us as South Africans.

Hailing from Louis Trichard in Limpopo. J-Smash had the privilege of working with such artists as A-Reece, Ginger Trill, Benchmarq and many others from as early as 2016. At the time, SA Hip Hop seemed to be at its peak and was widely regarded as the priority genre in the South African music scene.

As all genres develop, we now see that there is a new wave of SA Hip Hop moving in where younger artists have developed the sound of SA Hip Hop into something fresh. J-Smash although considered as Youth got an early start and may also be seen as a veteran in many circles.

In his latest song, The Truth, which is taken off his upcoming album we find that he has enlisted those who have been on this journey with him.

These include the legendary Kwesta, hard hitting YoungstaCPT and Thato Saul, a young Pitori MC. These MCee’s have combined on this J-Smash masterpiece to give us bars reflective of the talents we have come to know them for.

Thato Soul opens the track with his fresh approach that has catapulted him to rap superstardom. The young Pitori prince has stolen the hearts of South Africans with his unique, yet catchy rhymes and he does the same on The Truth. His addictive Pitori slang and wordplay have this distinctive charm that makes you want to rewind and start his verse from scratch.

YoungstaCPT comes in as aggressive as you know him, and the beat allows him to be his gritty and hard-hitting self. One will say that this beat was made with the Kaapstad general in mind as he rides it with the ease of a painter on a vintage portrait.

Kwesta with the last verse was a genius move from J-Smash. The K1 King is usually a standout on relaxed high bass beats where his signature voice waxes lyrical over a beat. On “The Truth”, Kwesta comes with an unexpected flow with genius lyricism that gives Rap listeners even more reason to understand why he is the legend that he is.

J-Smash has once again managed to assemble a team of SA Rap Royalty on a body of work that further adds merit to the notion that he is up there with the best producers in South African Hip Hop!
