South African band Mafikizolo croons “Kwanele,” a song featuring associates and compatriots Sun-El Musician and Kenza.
Mafikizolo is a band of two. It has not always been that way, however. It was formerly a three-person band. One of them had been killed in a road rage years ago, leaving just two members to push ahead and continue with the group’s message.
Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Nciza are doing pretty well as the band’s two surviving members. In the years since the exit of one of them, the duo has released several charming numbers and been nominated for and won awards.
And from the look of things, they’re not done yet. “Kwanele” is as much an affirmation of their creative energy as it is of their staying power as a group. Other groups have disbanded since, but Mafikizolo remains one united entity, dishing out great music again and again.
“Kwanele” is a lyrical winner on many levels, a song just about anyone should be okay having on a playlist. The choice of Sun-El Musician and Kenza cannot be faulted, either. They did well as ancillary voices on the song.
If you care for a splendid musical break right now, you should open your soul to “Kwanele.” No qualms.
