After much deliberation, Apple has decided not to release a new netbook. They concluded that because netbooks are not part of the ideal consumer experience due to their “cramped keyboards, terrible software, junky hardware, [and] very small screens,” Apple does not want to put its brand on such a product.
Apple furthermore says that the iPod Touch and iPhone function very well as pocket computers and allow for basic computing tasks, such as surfing the web and listening to music, and that these devices are some of the reasons why consumers are purchasing netbooks in the first place.
Although Apple currently does not plan to produce any netbooks, it has not closed this door altogether. If opportunities present themselves in the future and if Apple can create a product that “really makes a contribution,” then the company would be willing to enter the netbook market.
