21 Dead In N2 Pongola Accident

There have been 21 confirmed deaths in the N2 Pongola accident.

Mzansi was hit with sad news on Friday when a truck collided with a bakkie on the N2 near Pongola, leading to 21 fatalities. According to reports, the KZN Emergency Medical Services worked hard to extricate bodies left on the roadside after the wreckage.

All 21 of them included 19 children between the ages of 5 and 12 and two adults. eNCA had released footage showing the track trying to overtake another one when it plunged into the bakkie. One of the children died after being rushed to the iTshelejuba Hospital.

A report published by SA Trucker reveals that they received an audio clip from the truck driver where he alleges that he was fleeing from traffic officials when he crashed into the bakkie. According to a post by Road Angels Traffic Info, the driver was reportedly a part of the protest action on the N2.

News of the crash sent shock waves through Pongola, and Sikhosana, in a statement, adviced motorists to drive with caution. “On behalf of uPhongolo Municipality, I send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the learners who lost their lives in the accident. We hope the affected families will find comfort, hope, and courage during this time of painful loss.”

KZN Transport and Community Safety MEC Sipho Hlomuka is scheduled to visit the scene today. He expressed deep shock at the news.
