Ainsley Moos, the 45-year-old council chairperson of Stellenbosch University (SU) and executive at African Rainbow Capital, has died suddenly and unexpectedly following complications during a minor medical procedure.

Moos served on the SU council since 2014 and held various positions, including the chair of the council’s remuneration committee and a member of the executive and human resources committees. He was elected deputy chairperson in 2018 and started his term as chair on December 3, 2021.

Professor Wim de Villiers, SU’s Rector and Vice-Chancellor, described Moos as “an extremely talented council chairperson” and “valued and loyal friend of the university” who provided inspirational support. Deputy Chair of Council Dr. Nicky Newton-King said Moos’ humility and calm leadership helped the council through critical challenges.

Moos was a proud SU alumnus, having completed his undergraduate and honors degrees there and an MBA in 2009. He had a successful career in journalism and held various positions at Media24 before moving to Sanlam and then African Rainbow Capital. He is remembered as a passionate, talented, and opinionated person who touched the lives of many.
