The old truth that crime doesn’t pay has just played out in the life of five men who were found guilty of killing the singer and actor Dumi Masilela in August 2017.
Bongani John Masombuka, (34), Sfundo Harrison Nkosi, (33), Khumbudzo Solomon Mukhuba (27), Brian Makhubedu (24) and Mashudu Malema (31) were found guilty of murdering Dumi Masilela and sentenced to life in prison.
The five conspirators had shot Masilela in the abdomen in on 2 August 2017 and he died a day later in the hospital, on 3 August.
Although they had made confessional statements earlier, they later claimed that they made the confessions under duress. But the presiding judge ruled that they failed to provide witnesses to back up their claims of innocence.
The sentence comes as little relief for the family of the deceased, especially his mother. Until his death, Dumi Masilela was known for his role in a couple of flicks, including “Rhythm City.” He was also a singer to whom songs like with songs like “Ungasabi,” “Hamba,” and “Shona Phansi” were ascribed.
Besides the murder of Masilela, the five were also sentenced for other crimes. Their convictions put an end to a legal battled that has dragged on for years. Well, what do you think?
