Monkeypox Vaccine Now Available For At-Risk New Yorkers

Uncle Sam has got you covered. That’s the message for New Yorkers who might be at risk of Monkeypox.

New York has just broadened access to the monkeypox vaccine and is the first city in the States to do so. Yesterday, Thursday, June 23, the city expanded access to the vaccine to cover people who have a higher risk of contracting the virus.

This group encapsulates men who have had anonymous or multiple male sexual partners in the past two weeks. The monkeypox virus spreads through gay sex and contact with monkeys, among others.

When New York announced expanded access to the vaccine among a select group of people, the city had reported 30 cases of the monkeypox virus outbreak. Nationally, the United States had reported a total of 173.

Monkeypox has been around for years. It was prevalent in remote areas of the Congo but has started spreading across the world, leaving countries scrambling for ways to contain it. Although there have been reported deaths from the virus in the Congo, no deaths have been reported outside at the time of writing.

By the way, the symptoms of the monkeypox virus include a rash, swollen lymph nodes and flu-like symptoms. People with the symptoms are advised to avoid contact with others as much as possible and seek medical aid.
