A new case of monkeypox has been identified in the Gauteng area, according to a statement from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases.
According to reports, the case was in Johannesburg, and contact tracing had begun.
Speaking on the situation, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases’ Jacqueline Weyer, a principal medical scientist who heads the NICD’s Centre for Emerging, Zoonotic and Parasitic Diseases, noted that it means there are other cases of the disease in South Africa.
As a result, medical personnel have been urged to be alert for symptoms of the disease among those they are treating.
Monkeypox is not exactly a novel disease. It has been around for a while but just hadn’t become widespread. Previously. It was known as a disease that afflicted people from the Congo. Last month, however, there were several monkeypox outbreaks around the world.
Typically, the signs of the virus include a rash, swollen lymph nodes and flu-like symptoms. Those who have these symptoms are encouraged to void others and get tested. Also, having one or all of these symptoms does not necessarily mean one has the virus. A proper check should provide answers.
