Afrikaans Singer Theuns Jordaan Has Died

Popular Afrikaans Singer and songwriter, Theuns Jordaan has died after a short battle with cancer.

Mzansi is mourning the death of yet another well loved talent. On Wednesday, November 17, news broke that talented Afrikaans singer and songwriter, Theun Jordaan has died. Social media was immediately flooded with heartbroken reactions from his fans, friends and colleagues.

The singer died at the age of 50. Back in September 2020, it was announced that he had been diagnosed with Leukemia, after which he underwent chemotherapy. A post on his Facebook page, published in July of this year revealed that he was in remission. Sadly, he passed on Wednesday.

Several of Jordaan’s colleagues have shared tributes in his honour on social media. Speaking to Mail & Guardian, Coenie De Villiers revealed that his death was a “visceral shock” to them. According to him, they thought he was getting better. He further spoke about the legacy he left behind.

“Theuns will always be with us and he will always be known for the rich sound of his voice and his wonderful integrity and quality of his music, which has become a stock standard part of [the] South African [music landscape] , especially in the Afrikaans market.

He will be sorely missed, not only as a friend, but as a musician, as a songwriter and as a massive presence in the South African firmament. We will miss you: rest in peace brother — travel safely.” – Coenie.
