There is no end in sight yet in the drama South Africans have made out of the accent of one of their own – actress Thuso Mbedu. The Hollywood star has faced severe scrutiny and criticism over her American accent, with tweeps urging her to stick to the local accent back home.
Previously, when tweeps made fun of her American accent, she had secured a gig with a top brand and shared a clip of her speaking in isiZulu. That appeared to have impressed a lot of people. But it seems to end there for her critics – or perhaps they weren’t thinking about that when they criticised her accent as part of the judging panel of Miss SA 2023.
Actually, while some people faulted her accent, some actually saw nothing wrong with it, especially since it has in no way stagnated her career.

The actress herself is getting exhausted with the whole accent conversation. She recently clapped back at critics. She said her accent isn’t going away anytime soon and the earlier people get used to it, the better for them.
This brings up the question, Are the people listening? Thuso Mbedu has chosen to walk her path and it doesn’t appear there is anything y’all can do about it.
