Alleged Arson: Heartbreaking Scenes From Gutted Yeoville Market

In what’s suspected to be an arson attack, Yeoville market was gutted by fire late evening of Monday, June 19. The incident follows a series of threats foreign traders had received urging them to leave South Africa or the market would be burned.

Those behind the threats lived up to their words as they eventually touched the market, leaving many traders in the bowels of fear and despair.

It’s unclear who masterminded the assault, but many fingers point to vigilantes from Operation Dudula, a collective headed by Nhlanhla Lux. The group advocates pushing out all foreigners who got into South Africa illegally.

Lux believes the presence of this class of foreigners is robbing locals of jobs.

Before the assault on Yeoville Market, members of Operation Dudula had stormed the place in early June, stating they were going to evict foreigners from their stalls. The market had to v=be closed on 11th and 12th June as a result.

Amid the agony of the burning, Lux and his loud collective are yet to claim responsibility for the action, which set back some traders years. Fearing repercussions, some traders refuse to speak to the press. You can check out some of the pictures of the devastation below.
