ANC Conference: Embattled President Cyril Ramaphosa Wins Again

It has often been said that he who laughs last, laughs best. South African president Cyril Ramaphosa had a taste of this reality recently when he brushed off stiff opposition to emerge as the leader of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) for the second time.

The scandal-ravaged president squared off against other candidates, including Zweli Mkhize, who was the favorite of many. At the end of the ANC conference, though, the embattled president retained his slot.

His victory was wildly celebrated by his supporters, who cheered him on after it emerged that he had won the vote.

Ramaphosa’s chances of success were deemed slim by some analysts because of the scandal surrounding the heist at his farm in 2020, which he allegedly covered instead of reporting to the police authorities.

The heist was exposed by former police boss Authur Fraser, who also insinuated that the president might be involved in money laundering. The controversy was such that it was imagined that the president will either resign or be impeached.

None of that happened. Instead, Ramaphosa kicked his adversaries in the race to emerge leader of the ANC for the second time. Well, as the saying goes, he who laughs last, laughs best.
