Anni Dewani’s Murder: Zola Tongo Granted Parole After Serving Time In Jail

Zola Tongo, the man who played a vital role in the murder of Anni Dewani, has been granted parole after 12 years in jail. He was convicted of murder in 2010 and sent to the slammer.

In what must have played out like a horror movie, Dewani was shot faf while on honeymoon in November 2010. He was sentenced to 18 years in jail that same year.

He entered into a plea bargain during the trial and confessed that what was thought to be a regular carjacking in which Anni was killed was, in fact, a well-planned murder orchestrated by Anni’s husband, Shrien.

Unlike Zola, however, Shrien didn’t end up in jail as the prosecutors noted there was insufficient evidence to prosecute him.

However, the parole board found that the former shuttle operator, now 42, qualifies for rehabilitation and has served the minimum required sentence. So he was eligible to be released.

The parole board also noted that its decision was based on Tongo being of good behaviour while in jail.

Anni Dewani’s uncle Ashok Hindocha is unimpressed with the parole, though. He said Zola had been given a “discount” for the murder of Anni.

By the way, Shrien is said to have moved on with a gay partner four years after Anni’s death.
