Assault: Orlando Pirates’s Midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch To Be Sentenced In September

It is not yet uhuru for Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch, who is standing trial for gender-based violence. The footballer had reportedly assaulted his former girlfriend and was found guilty by the Randburg Magistrate’s court in June.

Now, his sentencing is to be determined. Originally due to be sentenced yesterday, Friday, July 28, his sentencing was eventually deferred to September for pre-sentencing.

In the next two months, specifically on September 4, Lorch will be back in court again where he will be sentenced for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The embattled footballer had reportedly assaulted his then-girlfriend, Fundiswa Mathithibala, in September 2020.

After the assault incident, Fundiswa had reported the case to the police and  Lorch was arrested. He was later released on R2k bail. The case has dragged on since then.

By Fundiswa’s account, Lorch had strangled her during an altercation at home when she asked for her car keys.

It is unclear what Lorch’s fate will be, but the player is certainly hopeful he would not end up in jail. A conviction and prison will ruin his footballer career as well as create a massive dent in his finances. But then, the law is the law. Stay tuned, y’all.
