Bodyguard Dead, Two Injured In Deputy President’s Convoy Crash

One bodyguard died, and two others were seriously injured in a car crash involving Deputy President David Mabuza’s convoy.

According to recent reports, deputy president David Mabuza’s convoy was involved in a crash on Sunday at around 10:30 am. The crash was said to have been caused by a burst tire. The deputy president was not involved in the crash.

According to reports, the car was involved in a convoy transporting the deputy president from Mpumalanga to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport. Colonel Athlenda Mathe, police spokesperson, said a tire on one of the backup vehicles burst, causing the vehicle to overturn. Mathe said,

“Three members who were in the vehicle sustained serious injuries. One of these members was declared dead at the scene while the other two were transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.” The driver of the vehicle died in the crash. Mathe revealed that the SAPS employee health and wellness unit was notifying the families of the victims.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has also sent his condolences to the deceased driver’s family, friends and colleagues. He wished the injured members a speedy recovery. Although Mabuza was unharmed, a culpable homicide has been registered at the Middelburg police station.
