Buffalo Shooting: Selena Gomez Slams Social Media Companies

My heart is broken, said Selena Gomez about the recent shooting in Buffalo that left several people dead. The actress is of the view that social media networks, including Facebook, have failed to counter misinformation and digital hate, invariably leading to the tragedy that recently played out in Buffalo

She had earlier shared the private message she sent to Facebook executives Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg in which she raised the issues of misinformation and hate speech on the platform.

Last Saturday, a white man shot and killed ten black people in what has since been dubbed a racially motivated crime.

The shooter, an 18-year-old, is said to have been self-radicalized by consuming hate posts on social media.

Selena Gomez is unimpressed by how social media platforms appear to look the other way while hate flourishes on their platforms. In an interview last year, she made it clear that she can’t stand the fact that people have to know that there are neo-Nazi groups online, and there are hate groups online.

By the way, Selena Gomez was recently criticised for allegedly shading Hailey Bieber with her skincare routine. But she dismissed that, insisting she never intended to diss anyone. She apologised all the same.
