Charlie Puth Recalls Elton John saying his Music “Sucked” — and What He Learned From the Criticism

During an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show yesterday, April 13, singer and songwriter Charlie Puth recalled the moment Sir Elton John told him his music sucked.

It was like a punch in the gut, but he took it in his strides and learned from it. He recalled he had similar thoughts about his music at the time. Elton John speaking out only gave Puth more clarity on his craft.

Charlie Puth and Elton John had worked on a song dubbed “After All” last year. But before then, Elton John had given Charlie a side of him — brutal honesty about his work.

Ordinarily, Elton John’s criticism would have thrown Charlie off the cliff, but it was more of a wake-up call for Charlie. He roused himself and decided to do better.

At the onset of the pandemic, he had a little soul-searching, sat down and decided only to put out music that he thinks comes from a true place within.

A lot has changed since then, including Charlie’s craft. He’s in a better place as a creative.

The interview appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show wasn’t the first time he’d spoken about Elton John’s brutal honesty, however. He had earlier this February spoken about John’s brutal honesty during an interview session with Kelly Clarkson.
