DA’S Breytenbach Is Accused Of Misogyny Following Her Gcaleka Comments In Parliament

The Democratic Alliance (DA) Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach has been accused of misogyny by the South African Women Lawyers Association (Sawla) after she accused Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka of sleeping her way to the top.

Gcaleka was on Friday given a nod of approval by Parliament after voting and recommending that she ascend from deputy Public Protector to the main post. Unfortunately, a comment made by DA Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach seems to have overshadowed her plans.

She accused Gcaleka of sleeping her way to the top where she is today. According to Breytenbach, Gcaleka’s rise in her career has been fueled by an inappropriate relationship with her former boss.

The DA’s advocate said, “The very cosy relationship, and some say intimate relationship, with her boss, the rather odious Menzi Simelane, led to speedy promotions and her very vocal and active support of his role in the capture of the NPA.”

In a recent statement, the South African Women Lawyers Association (Sawla) slammed the advocate’s claims and said it was disappointed that a female lawyer would make misogynistic comments about another female lawyer. They also stated that she had an opportunity to voice these claims during the Public Protector interviews but didn’t. Instead, she aired them on a platform that Gcaleka couldn’t respond to. They have called on the DA to take action against Breytenbach.
