David Makhura Steps Down As Gauteng Premier, To Be Replaced Thursday

Thursday is just a few hours away, and it holds a lot of promise for many out there – but not, maybe, David Makhura, the Gauteng premier. He is slated to be replaced on that day after an announcement was made that he would be stepping down.

The Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi is expected to replace David on Thursday. David had earlier confirmed his plane exit in a statement days earlier. In the statement he released, he confirmed that he had resigned as the premier of the province and a member of the legislature.

He also noted that he had already handed over his resignation to the speaker of the provincial legislature, Ntombi Mekgwe.

David Makhura’s exit didn’t surprise many who have been watching the province, though. As a matter of fact, some political anylsts had predicted his exit following the election of Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi as the chairperson of the ANC in the province.

Those words turned out prescient, and David Makhura is well on his way out. It remains to be seen what will happen tomorrow when David is expected to be officially out as Gauteng premier, and of course, what direction his political career will take after.
