Death Of Ugu Municipality Mayor Raises Poison Rumours

The passing of the Ugu Municipality Mayor raises rumours of poisoning.

The shocking death of Ugu District Municipality Mayor, Councillor Phumlile Mthiyane, has left councilors in shock and questioning what could have caused it. Councilor Phumile Mthiyane died just a day after the passing of the municipal manager.

Municipal manager, Dr. Elliot Michael Sibusiso Ntombela, died on Saturday, while Mthiyane died in the early hours of Monday. They were both known to be well at their time of death. IOL reports that an anonymous councilor said that said the mayor had led a delegation to visit the manager’s family in Empangeni on Sunday.

They said that there was no sign of sickness on that day. In shared statements to the Daily News, other anonymous politicians questioned the circumstances surrounding the Mayor’s death. In their opinion, they might have been both silenced. Ugu is on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

Refusing to be drawn into the poisoning speculation, Mafika Mndebele, ANC spokesperson, said, “The ANC as a leader of society cannot be part of speculation and would be guided by concrete evidence. All we can say for now is that we dip our revolutionary banner in Comrade Mthiyane’s honour.”
