Amapiano producer DJ Maphorisa has just shown love to his fellow musician and piano nut Mdu AKA Trp, earning the admiration of his compatriots in the process. The decision and the moment are both symbolic because DJ Maphorisa had previously been accused of gatekeeping the genre and not making way for others.

The comment on Mdu AKA Trp is especially symbolic coming from DJ Maphorisa, a man seen as one of the kings of piano music in South Africa. The other supposed king is Kabza De Small. Together, they have released a couple of hits, including “Scorpion Kings.”
By the way, there is nothing out of place in DJ Maphorisa’s praise of his compatriot. For one, Mdu AKA Trp is actually one of the most consistent amapiano producers out there and easily one of the top names in the genre in South Africa. He has certainly earned his stripes.
